Simple Play Dough Recipe

Here is a simple play dough recipe that both kids and adults can have fun with.
It is so simple to make, super soft and you can customize it as you wish.
Here is a photo of part of a batch my ten-year-old daughter is making for her school to sell at market day.
This simple play dough recipe is child safe and totally edible, although a bit salty.
We didn’t really like the floury smell of the dough, so we added vanilla essence into some of them, and lemon essence into others. Now they smell good enough to eat.
Simple Play Dough Recipe
You will need:
2 cups of flour
2 cups of warm water (make sure the flour and the water is the exact same quantity)
1 cup of salt (the salt stops the play dough from going off)
2 tbsps of vegetable oil
1 tbsp cream of tartar (this is optional, but does improve the elasticity)
food coloring and scented oils optional.
Method:
Mix the flour, water, salt and cream of tartar together and then stir over a low heat.
The dough will begin to thicken until it resembles mashed potatoes.
Once the dough starts to pull away from the sides and clumps in the center, remove from the heat and allow the dough to cool enough to handle.
If your dough feels sticky, simply cook it a bit longer.
Keep stirring and cooking until the dough is dry and feels like playdough. It starts to separate from the side of the pot.
Turn the dough out onto a clean counter or a silicone mat.
Knead it vigorously until it becomes smooth and soft.
Divide into sections for coloring.
How to color the playdough:
Make a hole in the center of the ball of dough and drop a few drops of food coloring in. You can also drop in your essential oils, vanilla essence or lemon essence at this stage of the process.
Work the coloring through your playdough. Try to keep the raw color away from your hands and your countertops. The raw color does stain, but once it is worked into the dough it doesn’t.
Store your play dough in an airtight container.
If it does begin to dry out, knead a bit of water into it.
If the dough gets soggy, try reheating it.
If you want to make figures and ornaments, you can bake the finished product in the oven until it hardens, and then paint it.
